Increasing number of young children are requiring mental health services

This week, ITV central are running a mental health series, investigating mental health issues in children and young people across the Midlands.

One of the findings of their investigation was the staggering number of children that are needing to access mental health services. Their report found that 332 children aged 5 and under were seen in the East Midlands, with 960 of the same age group being seen in the West Midlands.

More and more children are suffering from mental health issues including stress and anxiety problems which can be intensified in a school environment, especially during SATs exam periods where children will feel increased amounts of pressure pressure. This means there is an increased need to help children manage these issues through mindfulness programmes.

YogaBugs have been running mindfulness programmes for a number of years, working to help children “quiet their minds”, focusing away from worry and anxiety and helping develop their overall mindfulness.

Our programmes combine yoga postures with breathing techniques and meditation, this makes children focus on ‘the here and now’ and not to worry about the past or the future. This allows them to distance themselves from disturbing thoughts and emotions and improving their overall mental health with skills and techniques they can use throughout their life.
